Garin Hovannisian: This Movie was an Opportunity to Shed New Light on the First Genocide of Modern History

"Armedia" Information, Analytical Agency introduces an exclusive interview with Garin Hovannisian, co-writer/director of the movie "1915" shot in Los Angeles.

There are various films shot on the Armenian Genocide. How does your film differ from others? What is the main target, the main message of the film?

-  Our movie is about denial. It is about trying to escape from our past. But of course we can never truly do that, can we?

Getting familiar with the cast of the film it was very interesting to learn that there are also foreign actors and actresses in the film.  Was the choice of the cast easy? What is their attitude towards the Armenian Genocide?

-  Our cast approached "1915" not only as a work of cinema, but also as an opportunity to shed new light on the first genocide of modern history. I think you will see the sincerity of their commitment on screen.

Living in Los Angeles, how would you describe the attitude of the Armenians leaving in America towards Genocide? What events is the Armenian community planning on the eve of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide?

-  There are many events being planned: cultural, political, religious. A century later, on the other side of the world, we are still trying for ways to remember, mourn, redeem.

How is the Armenian Genocide related to you?

-  My co-writer/director Alec Mouhibian and I are the great-grandchildren of Genocide survivors. As to how the Genocide has affected us—or how it can possibly affect anyone a hundred years later—you might want to watch "1915."
