The UNHRC Adopted Armenian Initiated Resolution on Prevention of Genocide

On March 27, the United Nations Human Rights Council in its 28th session adopted the Armenian initiated resolution on prevention of genocide. The resolution encourages States to "promote the ascertainment of the truth by appropriate means as an important element in combating impunity promoting accountability as part of the prevention of genocide and comprehensive reconciliation", as well as it stresses that the "memorialization of genocides is one of the essential aspects of justice and reconciliation for victims, and plays an important role in the prevention of genocide."

The resolution adopted by the UN also calls the States to do their best to prevent genocide and "condemns the intentional public denial or glorification of crimes of genocide and crimes against humanity as defined by international law, and notes with concern that public denials create a risk of further violations and undermine efforts to prevent genocide."

The resolution further "recommends that the General Assembly designate 9 December as the International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of Genocide in order to raise awareness of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide and its role in combating and preventing the crime of genocide."
