Turkey Wants to Prevent the European Parliament Adopt a Resolution on Armenian Genocide

The Turkish authorities are in panic. Turkey will do its best for the European Parliament not to adopt the resolution on recognizing the events of 1915 as Genocide of Armenians. This was declared by the spokesperson of Turkey’s MFA Tanju Bilgiç.

On April 15 a discussion was held in the European Parliament to adopt a resolution on the Armenian Genocide. "Turkish officials will visit the European Parliament to meet the President Martin Schulz," – he said, Trend reports referring to Hurriyet. According to him, Turkey has already taken all the necessary steps so as the Parliament of Dania does not adopt the resolution. Bilgiç then noted that Turkey is opposed to "one-sided assessment of the events of 1915 and their use as political pressure on Ankara."

The Vice-President of the European Parliament Ulrike Lunacek, on the other hand, mentioned the importance of the resolution and stated that the national parliaments and governments of the EU member states will be suggested to adopt resolutions and decisions on recognition and condemnation of this crime against humanity.

At the same time the Turkish authorities want to prove the world that they are very human and as if try to "help Armenians." Turkey declares that has carried out a number of restoration projects and has restored Armenian churches in Turkey. Restoration projects are part of the government's plan, which wants to show that improves the rights of the Armenian community in Turkey.

However,  the restoration of a dozen of churches across the country without a doubt is connected with the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. As Hurriyet writes, the government's efforts to reconcile with a small Armenian community in Turkey began a few years ago with the opening of Akhtamar Church in the south-eastern city of Van. It is reported that Ankara has spent 2 million Turkish liras for the restoration of the church, and in 2010 for the first time in 95 years a religious ceremony was held there.
