7 of 9 Deputies of Bundestag Called the 1915 Massacres of Armenians Genocide

Today, on April 24, Germany’s Bundestag discussed the resolution on 1915 massacre of Armenians by Ottoman Turkey. During the plenary session 7 of 9 deputies called the intentional annihilation of Armenians, Greeks and Assyrians by Ottoman Turkey as Genocide, Armenpress reports.

Speaking about the Armenian Genocide that took place 100 years ago, MPs belonging to different factions, including Norbert Lamere, Christoph Bergner, Cem Ozdemir, Norbert Rottgen, Bent Fabricius unanimously recognized it as Genocide and condemned its denial.

In his speech Turkish deputy Cem Ozdemir strongly criticized the denial of the Armenian Genocide and urged to apologize to Armenians and Armenia, Panorama.am reports.

The ruling CDU member Norbert Rotgene stressed Germany's responsibility for the Armenian Genocide issue and said that even a hundred years later there could be recognition and condemnation.

According to Deutsche Welle, Merkel's spokesman, Steffen Seibert, has said Merkel agrees with legislators using those terms. The wording of the statement, although somewhat softened, is expected to infuriate Ankara. However, Germany's two parliament opposition parties - the Greens and the Left Party - said this wording will not meet such a reaction.

The resolution of the Armenian Genocide will be put to final voting on April 30.
