France Celebrates Its National Day - Bastille Day
Every year on July 14 everyone in France celebrates the national holiday - Bastille Day (La Fête Nationale) or the day of July 14 (fr. Le Quatorze Juillet). As Calend.ru informs, this holiday has been celebrated since 1880.
The historical event which became the basis for the establishment of this day took place during the French Revolution - in 1789, when the Parisian rebels took the Bastille fortress-prison - a symbol of royal tyranny, and liberated the seven prisoners. This event is considered to be the beginning of French Revolution, as well as a symbol of the overthrow of absolutism.
Although Bastille Day is a national holiday of France, it is celebrated not only in this country but around the world. The siege and taking of the Bastille is one of the greatest events in the history of mankind. It has become a symbol of revolutionary progress through political liberation, and the word "Bastille" became a denominative.
