What will the Consequences of Abolition of Oslo Accords be?
The Israeli-Palestinian conflict seems to be entering a new stage. This new stage, however, is not going to be better than the previous one, moreover, obviously it will destroy all the previous efforts done towards the reconciliation of Palestinians and Israelis. The declaration of PLO lead to the realization of this prediction.
According to different reports the PA President Mahmoud Abbas is going to come up with an announcement in the UN General Assembly and declare Palestine a state under Israeli occupation, as well as to annul the Oslo Accords and other agreements with Israel, The Times of Israel reports.
The reports on annulling the agreements between the PLO and Israel has been confirmed by Ahmed Majdalani, a senior PLO official. He told the Palestinian Ma’an news agency that the central committee is going to discuss and vote for announcing the annulment of all agreements signed between the PLO and Israel, and to declare a new relationship with the Jewish state.
Still there is no official response to the intentions of PLO, but as The Times of Israel reports, in private conversations Israeli officials say that this is simply a provocation, but also express some concerns what Ramallah will do the next and what the reaction of Israel will be.
"It’s an empty statement. I don’t think it has any significance whatsoever. Nothing Abbas says, no declaration he makes at the UN, will change anything on the ground," said Alan Baker, a retired Israeli diplomat and former legal adviser to the Foreign Ministry.
To understand what consequences the annulations of Also Accords may have in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, one should be reminded about the content of these Accords. These are a set of agreements signed between Israel and Palestine in 1993 and 1995. With these agreements, as the Office of the Historian writes, Israel accepted the PLO as the representative of the Palestinians, and the PLO recognized Israel’s right to exist in peace. The sides also assumed governing responsibilities in the West Bank and Gaza Strip over a five-year period. In general, the Olso Accords regulate security and economic cooperation between Israel and the PA.
Thus it means that if these Accords are annulled, the sides will not be bound by any legal document and will not have any commitments towards each other, feeling free to act the way they find it necessary. This, of course, can bring to the intensification of the situation and the creation of a greater instability in the region.
