Turkey and the EU to Start Negotiations on Updating the Customs Union
Negotiations between Turkey and the EU on updating the Customs Union will begin in 2016, the Minister for EU Affairs of Turkey Volkan Bozkır declared.
As RIA Novosti reports, Ankara is seeking renegotiation of the customs union with the EU, according to which Turkey must open its markets to third countries, which will conclude a free trade agreement with the EU. At the same time Turkish goods will not be able to go duty-free to the markets of third countries, as Turkey is not a member of the EU.
Earlier Bozkır stated that Ankara may withdraw from the customs union with the EU if its economic interests at the signing of an agreement between the US and the EU on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership will not be taken into account.
