How Do People Celebrate the New Year in Artsakh?

Do not get surprised if walking in the streets you notice a holiday table, the other side of which can hardly be seen. It means you are in Tsmakahogh village of Martakert region in Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh Republic) and you can be sure that your New Year mood is ensured. Far away from the world haste, high on the mountains in the divine village the New Year turns into a real fun. The old and young gather, a holiday table is laid in the center of the village; the table is decorated by traditional Armenian seven dishes (mayrapur, kcheghash, taregata and others) and the Artsakh people welcome New Year under the Armenian traditional music.

If you travel in the streets of the capital Stepanakert and notice that the objects around are hard to see, again you do not get surprised, it is the smoke of the Armenian traditional barbeque spread in the air. Starting from 20:00 on December 31, it is hard to find a yard of house or a building, where there is no barbecue around which the residents of the building friendly prepare Armenian traditional barbeque.

And if it happens that in that building, there is a guest from other place, for example from Yerevan, he or she  can feel  sure  that  because of hospitability and openheartedness of Artsakh people he/she can feel at home. To sense what is said you just need to call anyone from Artsakh, tell him/her that you are going to celebrate New Year in Artsakh and you need an apartment. Do not get surprised if the answer is an invitation to celebrate the New Year together in their apartment.

If you decide to walk in the streets of Shushi stronghold and enter Ghazanchetsots Cathedral; the doors of which are open for you even late at night, do not get surprised to find a child there  with a pomegranate in his/her hands. He or she just hurried to the cathedral  to have a holiday pomegranate blessed.

And of course the holiday will not be a real one, if there were not a brave Armenian soldiers standing on the borders. Because of their devotion and strength the Armenians in two Armenian republics are able to celebrate the New Year. It is not by chance that one of the main toasts around the table nearly always are devoted to Armenian soldiers.

Happy New Year to everybody and let’s once more express our gratitude to the Armenian soldiers.
