The Anniversary of Gyumri Tragedy: Unfinished Work, Unrealized Dreams

A year passed after the tragic events in Gyumri... The house where 7 people lived, where happy voices of children were heard, became quiet and cool. On the night of January 12, 2015 a soldier of the 102nd Russian military base in Gyumri Valeriy Permyakov illegally left the military base, entered the house of Avetisyan family and brutally murdered six members of the family, and seriously wounded the 7th member - little Seryoja. Despite the efforts of the Armenian and Russian doctors, the baby also left this world. "He became a little angel," people mourning the death of the child and his family said.

A few hours after the murder, Permjakov’s searches began across the country, in which Russian military also participated. On the night of January 13 at 12:15 a.m Permyakov was arrested by Russian border guards on the Armenian-Turkish border. According to a1plus, Russian border guards did not give Permjakov to the RA Police, and sent him to the 102nd base.

This, of course, has caused a discontent in Armenia, as all were waiting for the murderer to be punished in Armenia. Protests started in the country. People were demanding to punish Permjakov. They were demanding justice. At the same time, some anti-Russian sentiments were being felt. Whether they were provoked by another side or not, is unknown, but one thing was clear - Russia and Armenia were doing everything to prove that a full investigation and achieving justice on the case of Avetisyan family is in common interests.

With the demands of Armenian citizens, Prosecutor General of Armenia asked the Russian side that the case was investigated by Armenian law enforcement officers and judicial process also took place in Armenia. After the 5th garrison court of Russia’s North Caucasus District Military Court sentenced Permyakov to ten years of imprisonment in a tight institution without penalties and on an unrestricted basis, the case was transferred to the Armenian side, Panorama.am reports. During the first court hearing, which was held on December 18, 2015, the version that Permyakov is a satanist was put forward. The second hearing is scheduled on January 18, 2016.

What all Armenians are waiting for is a just punishment of Permjakov. But, unfortunately, we also know that we cannot return the 7 innocent people whose lives were taken away... Unfinished work, unrealized dreams ... It is said that people are alive until they are being remembered. We remember you...
