Iran Warns Turkey

Hurriyet Daily News

Iranian officials have warned their Turkish counterparts over Turkeys growing cooperation with Saudi Arabia. Tehran considers Al-Riyadh to be one of the losing countries in the Middle East because of its wrong policy, Hurriyet reports. "This is what we tell our Turkish friends. Be cautious! Do not bet on the loser," Deputy FM Ibrahim Rahmanpour said.  He held consultations with his Turkish partners.

It should be noted that the deepening cooperation between Turkey and Saudi Arabia is obvious amid the Syrian conflict. Saudi Arabia and some other Gulf states said they are ready to send ground armed forces to Syria in cooperation with Turkey. Moreover, according to some sources Turkey and Saudi Arabia intend to hold joint military exercises.

Iran and Turkey have opposite positions in the Syrian conflict. Ankara and Al-Riyadh have been providing enormous financial and military means to extremist armed groups, while Iran has been one of the reliable partners of the Syrian government from the very beginning of the crisis. Iranian officials stress that Iran acts in Syria due to an invitation from Damascus. And this "cannot be said in case of Saudi Arabia".

Tehran is skeptical, putting it mildly, over the idea of sending Saudi ground troops to Syria, noticing that a country that is losing in Yemen cannot go into another war. "It’s a joke. We couldn't wish for more than that. If they can do it, then let them do it," Al-Monitor quotes an Iranian military source who asked not to be identified.
