Obama Flying to London in Order to Keep the Britons in EU

AP

The U.S. President Barack Obama will come to London in April and urge British voters to back continued membership of the European Union, The Independent reports.

Britons vote in June on whether to remain part of the world's biggest trading bloc and Obama has previously said he wants Britain to stay in the EU and help maintain the post-war transatlantic partnership.

Most opinion polls show voters are split with a large number of people as yet undecided.

However, the Brexit campaigners complained that the intervention from the president of a country that won its independence through a civil war was hypocritical and told Mr Obama to ''keep his views to himself''.

Even a campaign has been launched on the UK Parliament's website to 'Prevent Obama From Speaking In Westminster Regarding The In/Out Referendum'. The online petition to stop him from intervening in the EU referendum has already attracted more than 16,000 signatures.

If it reaches 100,000, the motion will be considered for a debate by MPs in the House of Commons, Daily Mail reports.

The London mayor Boris Johnson, a fiery anti-EU politician, in turn attacked the US president, very cynically commenting on his visit to Britain.

''So now the British people will be told to be good to themselves, to do the right thing,'' Johnson said. ''We will be informed by our most important ally that it is in our interests to stay in the EU, no matter how flawed we may feel that organization to be.''

According to Express, the Brexit supporter also added "Never mind the loss of sovereignty; never mind the expense and the bureaucracy and the uncontrolled immigration. The American view is very clear.''

However, Barak Obama's intervention in the EU referendum has been quite natural and expected and it will hand a major boost to the "In" campaign due to the popularity of the US President among British voters.
