Who will Replace Davutoglu?
Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu has announced his decision to leave the chairmanship of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) at an extraordinary convention on May 22.
"My term [as prime minister] was one of success. With this decision, there is no feeling of unsuccessfulness or regret over what I have done. I did my job properly and with honor," Hurriyet quotes Davutoğlu's words.
According to mass Media, the reason of Ahmet Davutoglu's decision to give up his premiership is deepening disagreements between the President Erdoghan and Prime Minister Davutoglu. Erdogan wants an executive presidency in Turkey to replace the current parliamentary system as under Turkey’s current Constitution, the prime minister is the most powerful figure, and the president is a largely ceremonial figure. But Erdogan wants more and actually has more influence in Turkey.
Despite the reported disagreements, Davutoglu declared that his friendship with Erdogan is iternal. "Whatever will happen, I will continue my relation with our president … until my last breath. The honor of our president is my honor. His family is my family. No one should dare to initiate new plots," he said.
According to Financial Times, Davutoglu's possible successors are Binali Yildirim, Transport Minister, whose name was included in a now-quashed corruption investigation in 2013; Berat Albayrak, Energy Minister and Erdogan’s son-in-law; and Bekir Bozdag, Justice Minister. All these three people are considered be loyal to the president.
