To Smile Children Just Need a Little Love, Attention and Care

Children are the gifts of God. They need not only food, clothing and shelter, but first and foremost - parental love and warmth. On June 1, around the world, including Armenia, International Children's Day is being celebrated – a day, which symbolizes the carefree and happy childhood, full of bright and colorful moments. However, unfortunately, in our country there are many children, who are deprived of parental care and the opportunity to live in a family.

"There are about 630 children in the state orphanages of Armenia at the moment. Among them there are children, who have parents, but have left them. There are also cases, when a parent or the parents of the child are in prison, in psychiatric hospitals, abroad or for other reasons cannot take care of their children," the head of the Department of children's affairs of the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs Lena Hayrapetyan said this in a talk with “Armedia" IAA.

To the question, whether there is an activation of adoption process in Armenia, Ms. Hayrapetyan noted with regret that the number of adoptions fell. According to her, this is due to the fact that the number of children available for adoption has decreased. At the same time, there are children with health problems, which is also a factor for a decrease in the number of adoptions. "If five years ago annually in average 150 children were adopted, today that number is around 100," she added.

Talking about children available for adoption, Hayrapetyan said that this process is regulated by law. "The law sets out the legal cases, when a child can be adopted – he/she should be an orphan or parents should be deprived of their parental rights."

If a person has ever been in an orphanage, he/she would agree that a completely different world opened before him/her - full of longing, mixed with grief and a sense of helplessness.
