"Euro 2016" - a Championship of Unprecedented Clashes

This year's European football championship has been really unprecedented in the number of clashes between fans of different teams.

First of all, on the eve of England - Russia match in Marseille, British and Russian fans clashed in pubs, during which the inhabitants of Marseille also participated. Police applied tear gas to disperse the offenders.

Then, new clashes took place in the French city of Lille, this time between the Russians and Welsh people.

The fans from Wales provoked Russians by singing offensive songs about Russia. The police detained them all.

Clashes also took place between Poland and Northern Ireland football fans. French police arrested them, too. There is information that 9 football fans suffered as a result of the beating.

After this, the French Interior Minister Bernard Kaznyove urged Euro 2016 host cities to prohibit or restrict the sale of alcohol near the stadiums, especially on the eve of the football matches.

UEFA in turn made a statement following the recent clashes.

"UEFA believes that local authorities and law enforcement agencies will ensure fans' safety. We call on all the fans to be quiet and respect each other during the European Championship, refraining from any provocations," UEFA statement reads.

UEFA also decided to provisionally disqualify The Russian team. Disqualification will enter into force when Russian fans ever again will try to violate public peace during the matches.
