The International Media on Sargsyan-Aliyev-Putin Trilateral Meeting

Yesterday, on June 20, Presidents of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Russia met in St. Petersburg to discuss issues on Karabakh conflict.

This immediately caught the attention of the international media which reported largely about the meeting and its details.

''Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan and his Azerbaijani counterpart Ilham Aliyev met key regional power broker Putin in Saint Petersburg after the worst violence in decades over the contested territory,'' Euroactive wrote, in particular,  ''A Russian-brokered ceasefire put an end to four days of heavy clashes but tensions remain high as both sides accuse the other of breaching the pact.''

''A joint statement issued by the Kremlin after Monday's talks says with the aim of furthering the peace talks they agreed to increase the number of international observers in the conflict zone,'' American Fox News in turn wrote. ''At present there are only six unarmed observers from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) deployed in the region to monitor the situation''.

''In the joint statement, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev expressed satisfaction that a cease-fire is now holding,'' Associated Press Agency reported.

''Nagorno-Karabakh is officially part of Azerbaijan, but since a separatist war ended in 1994 it has been under the control of forces that claim to be local ethnic Armenians but that Azerbaijan claims include regular Armenian military,'' The Washington Post wrote.

The U.S. supports peaceful settlement of the Karabakh conflict, U.S. Ambassador to Azerbaijan Robert Cekuta tweeted on the official page of the U.S. Embassy in Baku.

As haqqin.az reported, the diplomat reiterated the importance of resolving the conflict peacefully.

It should be noted that the head of the EU Delegation to Azerbaijan Malena Mard in turn said that the meeting in St. Petersburg between the Presidents of Azerbaijan and Armenia is a positive step towards a peaceful settlement of Karabakh conflict.

"The EU supports all steps taken in this direction. We, as the European Union, are in favor of a peaceful settlement of the conflict. We support all efforts made, including the efforts of the OSCE Minsk Group. To achieve a comprehensive settlement of the conflict it is necessary to establish a dialogue between the parties," Mard told journalists.

It should be recalled that this was the second meeting of the Presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan after April four-day war,
