The Mediators Are the Target of Azerbaijani Aggressive Policy

Accusing and threatening others in order to hide your own flaws and shortcomings is a tactic often used in politics. This is something which we can often be seen in the Azerbaijani policy.

Throughout the whole process of negotiations Azerbaijan not only stayed loyal to this policy, but developed it year by year. If in the past Azerbaijan blamed, defamed and threatened only the Armenian sides, today the target of the Azerbaijani aggressive policy has become also the international community and first of all Minsk Group Co-Chairs. To better understand this it will be enough to look through the statements of the Azerbaijani president on the topic in the last several years.

The vivid example of this was the recent statement made by Ilham Alyiev during his meeting with the ministers addressed to the Co-Chairs and particularly to the US. In his speech he went so far to openly blame the US in sponsorship, thus violating all diplomatic norms.

If we try to analyze and understand the motives of such a stance by Azerbaijan we should perhaps firstly refer to the permissive policy of the Co-Chairs, in this case of the US, towards Azerbaijan. Such a policy of mediators crossed all the red lines during the April war, when the Co-Chairs closed their eyes on the vivid aggressive, military actions by Azerbaijan.

In the presence of Azerbaijani such a stance and the inadequate response of mediators to that, it is impossible to expect any constructiveness from Azerbaijan on the negotiation table. This is the reality that the mediators should sooner or later realize and take actions. Otherwise, such a stance of Azerbaijan already directed to mediators, if in the past only caused surprise, now raises questions about the competence of the very mediators.

The US should at least analyze why they allowed Aliyev to speak with them in such a way.
