Lebanese-Armenian Researcher: Kurdish Factor can Decide the Future of the Political System in Syria (EXCLUSIVE)
"The Syrian crisis is still in the middle, it will take a long bloody path. Some parts of the country are still controlled by ISIS and other Islamist factions, who enjoy some regional backing," Lebanese-Armenian independent blogger/researcher and founder of New Eastern Politics Forum Yeghia Tashjian said in a talk with "Armedia" IAA referring to the situation around Syria.
According to him in the recent escalation of the situation in Syria one should not neglect the Kurdish factor, as it can decide the future of the political system in Syria. "Syria can't return to its pre-2011 centralized system but if a federal system is established, Turkey will do its best to destroy any Kurdish autonomy by any means, fearing it may reach to its territories. Therefore, the Kurdish factor must be solved," the researcher said.
Tashjian also referred to the recent voting in the UN General Assembly over the situation in Syria, saying that Russia's position regarding the UN draft resolution and its veto are based on itsinterests in Syria. "Already, Russia feeling betrayed in Libya, Putin wants to keep Syria under his control due to many reasons. First, because Russia has a military base in Tartous, the only one in the Middle East. Second, Russia thinks fighting the radicals in foreign lands will protect its borders from potential Islamist radicals," Tashjian said adding that Russia again vetoed a UN resolution, because it wanted to accelerate the advance of the Syrian army in Aleppo.
Regarding the Armenians living in Syria, particularly in Aleppo, Tashjian said that he is not optimistic about their fate. However, he expressed hope that the crisis in Aleppo will end at the end of this month with rebel forces withdrawing from the parts of the city.
