EU Tries to Find the Key for Syrian Crisis Settlement

Amid escalating tensions between the two major powers involved in the Syrian crisis – the US and Russia, when further cooperation between them seems impossible, the European Union tries to find the key for the Syrian Crisis settlement in cooperation with the regional powers. Brussels says "the EU can help in creating the conditions for peace in Syria, working with key regional powers". "The cooperation with regional players is key to create the conditions for the physical, political and social reconstruction of Syria after the conflict," europa.eu informs.

The EU firmly believes that there can be no military solution to the conflict. The official Brussels has repeatedly stated that it "reiterates its commitment to the unity, sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence of the Syrian state". The EU continues support the efforts of the Global Coalition to counter "Islamic State" in Syria and Iraq.

Federica Mogherini, the EU's diplomatic chief visited Iran and Saudi Arabia at the end of October. The main topic of discussions in Tehran and Riyadh was the Syrian conflict. It is expected that Mogherini will visit Turkey and Qatar that are also among the major "players" of the crisis. This is the main route of Mogerini’s trip to the Middle East.

During the meeting with the Iranian President Hassan Rouhani the EU's diplomatic chief stressed that the EU "needed the cooperation of Iran, a key power, to solve the region's problems," DW reports. During the meeting with the Saudi King Salman the sides "discussed how to create space for a regional agreement on the future of Syria."

The European Union’s activity in this direction is not accidental. The EU is one of the main sides that mostly suffered from the conflicts of the Middle East. Migration and terrorism are EU's main challenges today. Mogherini’s Middle East trip indicates that the EU acknowledges the role of regional countries in the process of settlement of the Syrian conflict.

It is not excluded that EU efforts can achieve certain results also because of the fact that the Syrian conflict cannot be solved without the involvement of all the "players." But at the same time even the cooperation between the regional powers cannot provide the settlement of the conflict until the main powers – the US and Russia have not reached agreement over the problematic issues, among them is the separation of terrorists and the opposition forces. Thus, the efforts of the European Union may just provide a favorable ground for Russian-American deal-making.
