Expectations of Israel's Pro-Settler Politicians and the Plans of Trump

Charisma News

Israel’s Parliament (Knesset) has voted to retroactively legalize thousands of illegitimate settler homes in outposts built on private Palestinian land. Though the bill still has to pass a further three votes before becoming law, it has become a subject of criticism for the opposition of the country, as well as for Palestinians, The Guardian reports. They have described the legislation as a land grab that would further distance prospects for a two-state solution to end the long Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

It should be mentioned that the law is prompted by Naftali Bennett, the far right leader of the Jewish Home party, pro-settler politician, who was very much encouraged with the election of Donald Trump as the US President, hopping that the two-state solution will not be on the US agenda any more.

But will the expectations of pro-settler politicians in regard with Trump be met?

The fact that during the Obama administration the Israeli-American relations had deteriorated quite seriously and the Obama administration was a kind of a deterring factor for Israel not to be too destructive in Israeli-Palestinian conflict resolution process is obvious. It is also visible that Trump has a wish to bring the Israeli-American relations to at least the previous level. However, it is still ambiguous whether his becoming the US President would mean the end of two-state solution or that Israel can easily expand its settlements.

Recently media wrote that Trump intends to nominate General James Mattis to serve as Secretary of Defense. If this becomes the case, then pro-settler politicians in Israel would hardly be happy. US Marine Corps General nicknamed "Mad Dog" is known for his comments that settlements in the occupied West Bank are leading Israel becoming an "apartheid" state, Middle East Monitor reports. "If I’m in Jerusalem and I put 500 Jewish settlers out here to the east and there’s 10,000 Arab settlers in here, if we draw the border to include them, either it ceases to be a Jewish state or you say the Arabs don’t get to vote — apartheid," Mattis said once.
