President Obama spoke with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in his final conversation with a foreign leader as president, The Hill reports.
The phone call comes one day before the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump, who has frequently criticized Merkel.
Both leaders agreed maintaining close ties between the US and Europe is “essential to ensuring … a rules-based international order and the defense of values that have done so much to advance human progress in our countries and around the world.”
