The New Parliament of the RA Will Take more Consolidated Steps on International Recognition of the Armenian Genocide
As a result of April 2 Parliamentary elections in Armenia 4 political forces will be presented in the RA National Assembly, which for the upcoming 5 years will define the main directions of internal and external politics of the country.
Despite the fact that in many cases the political thesis voiced by the political forces during the campaign do not play great role for the voters, there are issues, which were and will remain important for Armenians. Armenian-Turkish relations and the question of the Armenian Genocide are among those issues.
Thus, to what approaches the voters gave their voice and which approaches they rejected in regard with the above-mentioned issues?
9 of the 7 political forces that wanted to enter the Parliament were for establishment of Armenian-Turkish relations and opening Armenian-Turkish close border without preconditions. 3 of these 7 forces received the votes of the society – Armenian Republican Party, "Tsarukyan" alliance and "Yelq" alliance. The fourth force that entered the Parliament – Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF) in its election program did not refer to the establishment of relations, instead it mentioned that it is necessary to form a resistance against the Turkish-Azerbaijani tandem.
It should be mentioned that "Ohanyan-Raffi-Oskanyan" alliance, "Armenian Communist" and "Free Democrats" parties, which did not enter the Parliament, were also in favor of establishing relations, of opening Armenian-Turkish border. "Congress-People's Party of Armenia" alliance, being in favor of establishing relations, at the same time mentioned that the settlement of Armenian-Turkish relations can take place after the settlement of Karabakh conflict or in parallel to it. As for "Armenian Renaissance" party, it did not refer to Armenian-Turkish relations at all.
In regard with Armenian Genocide the voters gave their voice to those forces, which consider international recognition and condemnation of the Armenian Genocide to be important. Besides international recognition and condemnation of Armenian Genocide, the ARF mentions that these issues should become an indispensible part of the RA foreign politics agenda, "Yelq" alliance is sure that it is very important to make the issue of the Armenian Genocide well-known to the international community.
In regard with correctly presenting the issue of Genocide, "Tsarukyan" alliance attaches importance to the role of Armenia-Diaspora cooperation. As for Armenian Republican Party, it is sure that besides international recognition of the Armenian Genocide, its condemnation and compensation, it is also important to make efforts in prevention and condemnation of genocides in general.
Armenian Communist Party that did not enter the Parliament did not refer to the issue of the recognition of the Armenian Genocide at all, while "Congress-People's Party of Armenia" alliance thinks that this issue should not be on the agenda of Armenia’s foreign politics. Other force that did not pass the threshold – "Ohanyan-Raffi-Oskanyan" alliance, mentioned that it will be possible to reach to international recognition of the Armenian Genocide, only when Armenia is a strong country, but according to this force, today it is not the case.
As in case of Armenian-Turkish relations, "Armenian Renaissance" party did not refer to the issue of Armenian Genocide in the election program.
Thus it can be mentioned that all 4 forces that entered the Parliament attach importance to restoration of Armenian-Turkish relations without preconditions. Besides, all these forces will be consistent in the international recognition of the Armenian Genocide, also taking steps for compensation.
