Threat to Strip Assad’s Wife of UK Citizenship
Asma al-Assad, the Syrian president’s British-born wife, is facing calls to be stripped of her UK citizenship after she was accused of propping up his propaganda operation.
UK MPs have called for the London-born wife of President Bashar al-Assad to be stripped of her British citizenship after details emerged of her role at the heart of the Syrian regime’s propaganda operation, The Sunday Times reports.
At least three official social media accounts under Asma al-Assad’s name are being used to prop up her husband, praise the regime’s “martyrs” and accuse the West of spreading lies.
Syria’s first lady, who comes from Acton, west London, is active on Instagram, Facebook and Telegram, an encrypted app that is more commonly used by jihadists. Her accounts boast a total of more than 500,000 followers.
