Armenian International Peacekeeping Missions

Փաստինֆո

The Armed Forces of the Republic of Armenia have started their international peacekeeping mission since February 2004. According to the information published on the official website of the Armenian Defense Ministry, it was at this time that the Armenian peacekeeping detachment of 34 people within the Greek unit went to Kosovo. Armenia's participation in the peacekeeping mission in Kosovo, carried out by NATO, continues till now, and every year about 70 Armenian peacekeepers leave for Kosovo.

It should be noted that the Armenian-American cooperation in the field of defense is connected with the cooperation of Armenia and NATO, as well as with the bilateral cooperation of the member states of the alliance, and sometimes with multilateral programs that do not contradict Armenia's strategic cooperation with Russia and its obligations to the CSTO.

In January 2005, the peacekeeping unit of the Armenian Armed Forces as part of the Polish unit joined the multinational peacekeeping mission in Iraq. Here, our peacekeeping forces were mainly involved in demining, transporting, and providing medical services. The peacekeeping units of the Armenian Armed Forces were withdrawn from Iraq in November 2009.

Since February 2010, the peacekeeping unit of the RA Armed Forces were included in the ISAF (International Security Assistance Force) in Afghanistan under the command of the Federal Republic of Germany and ensured the security of the airport in the city of Kunduz. It should be noted that the Armenian unit, before going to Afghanistan, passed 4-week training in Germany. Since 2010, Armenian peacekeepers have been serving in the capital of Afghanistan, Kabul, as well as in Kunduz and Mazar-e Sharif. At the moment, there are 120 Armenian peacekeepers in Afghanistan.

The next mission of the Armenian peacekeepers is in Lebanon under the auspices of the UN (UNIFIL). In December 2014, with the participation of an Armenian platoon of 32 military personnel, a peacekeeping mission was launched in Lebanon.

In addition to the above, Armenian peacekeepers participated in many international and multinational exercises.

It should be noted that Armenia also uses the experience gained in international peacekeeping missions for the development of the CSTO peacekeeping forces. As early as 2015, at the CSTO meeting, presenting the priorities of the Armenian presidency, President Serzh Sargsyan noted the need to create the main organization for the training of CSTO peacekeepers, the basis of which can be the center for the preparation of peacekeeping troops of the RA Armed Forces, RAZM.info recalls. The President also expressed his readiness to share more than 10-year experience of Armenian peacekeepers from different operations.

It should be added that the main training unit of the peacekeeping brigade of the Defense Ministry is the ZAR training center, where trainings of peacekeeping forces are carried out. Note that the construction of the training center was implemented by the co-financing of the American side. During the opening of Zar, RA Defense Minister Vigen Sargsyan expressed confidence that in the future the center will develop more and more, adding that a project is under discussion to create a serious center for increasing the capacity and of the peacekeeping forces.
