Davos-2018: Results of the First Day
At the time, when the protests against the arrival of US President Donald Trump at the World Economic Forum were held in Switzerland to make it clear he is "not welcome" (it is expected that the US president will address the forum in Davos on Frida), Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada was making a speech at Davos calling for equality between women and men, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The speech of the latter became the main event of the first day of the forum. The main part of Modi’s speech was built on the problems that threaten the humanity. In his opinion, they include global warming, terrorism and the policy of isolationism.
On the first day of the forum gender equality, fighting against illegal finances and corruption were discussed, It was suggested to organize the MeToo campaign (a hashtag against violence, born after the scandal with Harvey Weinstein) to fight corruption, marked a clear trend to increase interaction between states, banks and scientists. According to the participants, such joint work is a chance to avoid the next crisis. In general, the feature of the current forum was the optimistic mood of the participants. As follows from the survey of heads of transnational corporations conducted by PwC, 57% of them are confident that this year the world economy will grow. After several years of negative forecasts, the IMF also projected the growth of the world economy.
It should be recalled that the forum is attended by the Prime Minister of Armenia Karen Karapetyan. The first day of the World Economic Forum Karen Karapetyan met with top executives from major international companies, in particular with Hans-Paul Björner, President of Boston Consulting Group, BCG, which is one of the BigThree companies and VEON Group CEO Jean-Yves Charlier, and Foreign Relations Director Mark MacGann. Possible cooperation between the sides was discussed.
Prime Minister Karen Karapetyan met with Dominique de Buman, President of the Swiss National Council in Davos. The parties discussed the possibility of establishing a chamber of commerce, as well as cooperating in the fields of wine-making, smart agriculture, information technology, mining, renewable energy, education, tourism, and Swiss capital’s involvement in our country. The sides also touched upon the prospects for launching direct Yerevan-Zurich flight. At the meeting with the President of the Swiss Confederation Alain Berset an agreement was reached to enhance cooperation between individual Swiss companies and Armenian partners.
