A Woman in the RA Armed Forces: Happy Armenian Army Day!

The traditional gentle and feminine image of the Armenian woman has been going parallel with another brave and courageous image in many historical episodes. Since 1988, Armenia has been involved in a national liberation war to protect its historic lands. Armenian women also participated in this mission.

At present, more than 2,000 female soldiers are serving in the Armenian Armed Forces. However, a question arises as to what makes a woman get engaged in the military field, what problems and obstacles she faces in the men's sphere and in everyday life.

''Armedia'' IAA  presents an exclusive interview with Tamara Chilingaryan, the RA Armed Forces Officer.

- How did you decide to serve in the Armed Forces of Armenia?

- It may seem surprising, but I did not make that decision. It looks as if the destiny itself made that decision for me. My father has served for many years in the military magazine "The Armenian Army", becoming the editor-in-chief from just a translator. From a very young age, I have seen myself dressed in uniform and with special respect and care for those wearing uniforms. Looking through the newspaper I always thought the army was very important and necessary. When student, I began translating small articles in English or Russian, but I did not even think that one day I would work there myself. And at a mature age when the choice becomes more conscious and balanced, I decided to move to the RA Armed Forces and have my own contribution in strengthening our people and state.

- What characteristics would a woman have to become involved in this field?

- Each time presents its own specific requirements to the psychological structure of a person, or to the position that this person occupies in society. Nowadays women - most of them are required to have courageous character, to be brave and independent, and to be able to easily become a full member of the system. Of course, women are not required to manifest male attributes, but in my opinion, a woman can and has to contribute to the nation's empowerment and statehood development, and not just by giving life to a future soldier.

- What problems and obstacles do you overcome in the "male" sphere?

- Though they often speak of discrimination against women in different spheres, I have never encountered such discrimination. In this regard, the two-way consciousness is important for both men and women to be equally represented even in such "man-made" areas as the Armenian Armed Forces. We have created an exciting working and creative atmosphere where everyone is given an equal opportunity to demonstrate their skills and abilities.

- What kind of a woman is the the "woman in service" is the family and during the service?

- I think that the work, and in my case, the service and the family constitute an integral part of the life of a modern woman, but their merging is unacceptable. A woman should be a loving wife, a caring mother, but put all these aside and clearly set up her goals.

- Your wishes on the Day of the Armenian Army.

- I sincerely congratulate all of us on the Armenian Army Day and wish our army to be strong, and that every person serving in our army is filled with love towards the homeland and proud that he serves his people, his state.

"Armedia" IAA also congratulates on the day of the creation of the Armenian Army, wishing peaceful existence.
