Cyprus Presidential Runoff Underway
The second round of the presidential elections has gotten underway Sunday morning in Cyprus and, subsequently, the new head of state will be determined, reported TASS news agency of Russia.
Since none of the presidential candidates could pass the 50-percent threshold in the first round, the two candidates who received the highest number of votes are vying in the runoff. They are incumbent President Nicos Anastasiades, who received had 35.5 percent of the votes in the first round, and Progressive Party of Working People (AKEL) representative Stavros Malas, who had garnered 30.25 percent of the ballots cast in the first round.
The first results of Sunday’s presidential runoff in Cyprus are expected to be announced at 6:30pm local time.
