Will Merkel's New Coalition Overcome the Political Crisis in Germany?
The Christian Democratic Union, the Christian Socialist Union and the Social Democratic Party of Germany have agreed on a coalition government, but it is too early to talk about the end of the political crisis that lasts more than four months in Germany. The coalition agreement must still be approved by the members of the Social Democratic Party by a general voting. Moreover, there is a high probability that party members will reject the agreement. It should be recalled that immediately after the election, Social Democrat leader Martin Schulz said that this time they will not form a coalition with the Merkel alliance: many party members, especially the youth wing, continue to hold this point of view. Thus, the results of the inner-party vote of the Social Democrats, which will be known only in March, may even lead to an early election. However Schultz assured that this will not be necessary, and it will be possible to get at least 50% of the consent of the party members. It should be noted that the coordinated coalition agreement in the current situation, when the party is in grave crisis, is very beneficial for the Social Democrats. In addition to portfolios of the ministries of labour, family affairs, justice, environment, foreign affairs, Merkel agreed to transfer the portfolio of the Minister of Finance to the Social Democrats, which is considered a serious concession in the current economic situation in Europe. The presence of the finance minister's portfolio gives the Social Democrats certain mechanisms for influencing the country's social policy.
It should be noted that the results of the talks are quite successful for Schultz personally, since according to the agreement, he will head the German Foreign Ministry. This, naturally, will lead to certain changes in Berlin's foreign policy. Unlike the current Foreign Minister, Sigmar Gabriel, who is also a Social Democrat, Martin Schultz is far from the interests of German entrepreneurs, so it is unlikely to take steps to abolish anti-Russian sanctions. Instead, it is assumed that Germany will play a more active role on the pan-European agenda, taking into account that Schultz has worked for many years in European structures.
At the same time, the identity of Martin Schultz can be decisive for Germany's migration policy. It should be noted that as a result of coalition negotiations, the position of the Minister of the Interior Affairs will be held by the leader of the Bavarian party of the Christian-Social Union, Horst Seehofer, known for his tough stance on migration policy. The milder views of Schulz will help to conduct a balanced policy on this issue, while the appointment of Seehofer can help reduce the popularity of the right-wing party "Alternative for Germany."
As a result, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that the parties managed to form a stable and capable coalition government. And, despite this, it is obvious that Germany is experiencing a serious political crisis and needs serious changes in its political life.
