China's Constitutional Changes: Xi Jinping's Ambitions in and out of His Country
During the Pan-Chinese People's Congress, significant changes have been made in China's constitution, reflecting both China's growing ambitions and the strengthening of the country's current leader, Xi Jinping. Thus, amendments have been made to the constitution, which dismisses the two-time limitation of the five-year term of office of the Chinese leader and his deputy.
In addition, the text of the constitution was introduced in the name of Xi Jinping and his thoughts on "the development of socialism in China in the new era." This means that any dispute with Mr. Jinping on the country's development may be regarded as an encroachment on China's constitutional order.
Naturally, it was expected that in the near future Jinping would not leave the political arena, and moreover, the constitutional amendments will provide a basis for further strengthening of his power.
The constitutional amendments provide creation of a new anti-corruption body. By coming to power in 2013, Xi Jinping has been very effectively struggling against bribery, cleaning the party and why not, fighting against dissent. Obviously, he does not consider these efforts as sufficient.
As we have already mentioned, China's Constitution has added a point according to which China enters a new era with Chinese peculiarities through the construction of socialism. According to Jinping, China has proven the viability of the model of a single-party communist state and that its model should become a new choice for developing countries. This is perhaps the most worrying issue in the Chinese constitution for the superpowers and especially the United States, as China thus declares its ambitions to activate its role in world politics and spread its influence.
The constitution also states that the main directions of China's development will focus on agricultural development, reduction of technological downturn, and increase of welfare of the population. The latter is considered to be China's top priority for the coming years.
