St. Gregory of Narek Was Too Literate but at the Same Time He Was Very Humble: Pastor Ter-Komitas Daveyan

"Armedia" IAA presents an exclusive interview with Pastor Ter-Komitas Daveyan, the head of the Armenian Catholic Church of St. Gregory of Narek on the installation of the statue of St. Gregory of Narek in Vatican and the role and significance of St. Gregory of Narek.

How would you assess the importance of the installation of St. Gregory of Narek's statue in Vatican?

- I think this is really a very important event because, as we remember, in 2015 the Pope proclaimed St. Gregory of Narek as the 36th Doctor of the Church. So, presenting to the whole world who is St. Gregory of Narek, it is natural that in Vatican, where the statue of St. Gregory the Illuminator was also placed, the statue of St. Gregory of Narek should also be, as he is really a great person.

According to you, did St. Gregory of Narek become more known in the Christian world after Pope proclaimed him as a Doctor of the Church.

- Not only St. Gregory of Narek, but also Armenia and Armenians, because not everyone in the world knows about us. Indeed, any proclamation is propaganda, and proclaiming St. Gregory of Narek as a Doctor of the Church was no exception.

What is the role and importance of St. Gregory of Narek in Catholic and Christian world in general?

- You know, the most beautiful thing is that St. Gregory of Narek is not only religious, but also traditional. His book - Narek, was on everyone's lips. He is a popular person, not just theological or philosophical. He was not one who was unavailable. I remember that in past people said that during the illness one should put St. Gregory of Narek's Book under his pillow and it will definitely be possible to be cured. And I am glad that it was rooted in the Armenian culture. In addition, reading and studying "The Book of Lamentations," we understand St. Gregory of Narek's mystical thinking. His words are not abstract, it is an impression that he lived all that and he believed in his preaching and prayer. I think the prayer is a meeting, and when it ceases to be a meeting and turns into just sounds, it does not reach. Prayer starts from the heart and reaches to the hearts of others. And that is the greatness of St. Gregory of Narek. He was too literate but at the same time he was very humble, which is not given to every person. The Saints often express similar thoughts in different ways, but only St. Gregory of Narek used the phrase "a light without shadow", which means a light that penetrates everywhere and under it, it is impossible to simulate a shadow.
