Nikol Pashinyan, Demetris Syllouris Discuss Furtherance of Armenia-Cyprus Relations

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan received a delegation led by Demetris Syllouris, President of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus.

Welcoming the guests, Prime Minister Pashinyan noted that the relations between Armenia and Cyprus have historical roots, and there is no lack of reciprocated affection between the two peoples. “I am glad that our countries have shared views on regional issues. We highly value your country’s role in terms of worldwide recognition of the Armenian Genocide, in particular, and the prevention and condemnation of genocides, in general,” Nikol Pashinyan said.

The Prime Minister appreciated the Cypriot government’s position on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and their support of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs’ efforts. The Premier stressed that the Armenian government is keen to further develop the ongoing interactions in the political, economic and security spheres and, in this context, made a point of building cooperative ties on the sidelines of EU-Armenia relations.

The President of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus congratulated Nikol Pashinyan on his election as Prime Minister of Armenia and expressed confidence that the cooperation between the two countries will keep gaining momentum.

“Please be assured that we will assume the role of Armenia’s representative in the European Union, and will try to take steps to promote the ratification of the Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement and the visa liberalization process,” Demetris Syllouris said. He deemed as quite prospective the expansion of cooperation in security matters, economy, education and culture, noting that the Armenian community of Cyprus could well contribute to it. The President of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus highlighted the steps aimed at strengthening the business ties and expanding cooperation in this field.

Nikol Pashinyan and Demetris Syllouris highlighted the development of trilateral cooperation between Armenia, Cyprus and Greece. They expressed the hope that the sides will continue to work actively in this direction.

Nikol Pashinyan asked the guest to convey his warm greetings to Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and reaffirmed the invitation to attend the 17th Francophonie Summit to be held in Yerevan this fall.

During the meeting, the parties touched upon a number of issues of mutual interest.
