Kansas Governor Proclaims December 7 as Spitak Remembrance Day
Kansas Governor Jeff Colyer proclaimed December 7 as the Spitak Remembrance Day.

Proclamation reads:
WHEREAS, 30 years ago at 11:41 a.m., the Spitak earthquake of December 7th, 1988 caused unprecedented destruction, devastating an affected area of over three thousand square kilometers, 21 cities and regions, 342 villages; and,
WHEREAS, this scope of this disaster was overwhelming and the suffering as a result of more than 25,000 people being killed, over 100,000 people injured, and over 500,000 people displaced; and,
WHEREAS, the Armenian people were amazingly brave and quite incredible, coping under the most horrible circumstances; and,
WHEREAS, as the United States did then, Kansas does now, stand with the Republic of Armenia and Armenians everywhere; and,
WHEREAS, remembers this tragedy as one that forever changed the lives of all whom it touched; and,
NOW, THEREFORE, I JEFFREY W. COLYER, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF KANSAS, reaffirming the long-standing commitment of the State of Kansas to the Republic of Armenia and Armenians everywhere, and do hereby proclaim December 7th, 2018 as Spitak Remembrance Day in Kansas and urge all citizens to join in this observance. Our state and the Armenian nation stand together, with our partnership of peace, prosperity, and freedom.
