Armenia Parliament to Convene Special Session Monday

The meeting of the National Assembly (NA) Council took place this morning, from which we were informed that a special session was to be convened today at 1pm, during which the main law [the Constitution] of the country shall be amended. Edmon Marukyan, leader of the opposition Bright Armenia Party (BAP) and head of its parliamentary faction, stated this Monday during the traditional briefings in the NA, News.am reports.

He noted that it turns out that once this initiative is adopted in the first reading, it will not be sent to the Constitutional Court. "By and large, we [Bright Armenia] have nothing to say now because we have said what was to be said [about]. It is not ruled out that we will not participate in the sitting at all,” the BAP leader added, in particular.

To note, the draft amendments to the Constitution propose that the powers of the Constitutional Court judges of who have been in office for more than 12 years, as well as the term of office of the serving president of the Constitutional Court be terminated, and the next president of the Constitutional Court shall be elected by a new procedure. There are currently three Constitutional Court judges who have been in office for more than 12 years, whereas the current president of the Constitutional Court, Hrayr Tovmasyan, has been in office in this capacity for only two years, and therefore he will remain a member of the Constitutional Court.
