The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Anastasiadis, had a telephone conversation with his French counterpart Emanuel Macron on Sunday afternoon, athina984.gr reports.
During their conversation, which took place in the framework of their regular contacts, the two Presidents exchanged views on the latest developments in the Cyprus issue, in relation to the expected convening of the informal meeting "5 + 1", the purpose of which will be to an agreement is reached to restart the negotiation process.
In a written statement, government spokesman Kyriakos Kousios said that President Anastasiadis conveyed to his interlocutor his readiness to participate in substantive talks as soon as possible under the auspices of the UN Secretary-General, from where they had stayed at the Conference. .
The goal of our side, the President of the Republic underlined, is always to achieve a comprehensive, sustainable and lasting solution of a bi-zonal bi-communal federation based on the resolutions of the UN Security Council, as well as the principles and values of the European Union. Given that France is one of the Permanent Members of the Security Council, President Anastasiadis highlighted the role that Paris can play, in particular on security issues and the implementation of the Cyprus settlement agreement.
President Macron reaffirmed France's full support for the resumption of negotiations aimed at resolving the Cyprus issue on the basis of relevant UN Security Council resolutions and EU principles and values.
The two leaders also had the opportunity to discuss issues related to the forthcoming European Councils. Special mention was made at next month's Summit, when the issue of Turkey is expected to be discussed again on the basis of the relevant Report to be submitted by the EU High Representative, Mr. Borrell, who is expected to show a practical and sincere will for improving its relations with the European Union and with all Member States, through concrete actions that will last.
President Macron reiterated Paris' commitment to the strategically important Cyprus-France relationship aimed at jointly addressing challenges in the Mediterranean basin, as the two countries share the same vision for peace and stability in the wider region.
He also referred to the excellent and close cooperation between the two countries on a wide range of issues, including those that are on the European agenda and will soon occupy the Heads of State and Government of the "27".
