European Court Notifies CoE Council of Ministers of Armenian Captives
The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has submitted a notice to the Council of Europe (CoE) Committee of Ministers, voicing its concern over the violated rights of the Armenian prisoners of war (POWs), and civilians being held in Azerbaijani captivity.
It raised the urgency of the issue on March 9, citing Azerbaijn's repeated violations of the specified timeframes, as well as the failure by that country's government to provide comprehensive information, reports the Armenian representative to the Strasbourg court.
The decisions on applying an interim measure to Azerbaijan with respect to the Armenian captives are still in effect. Under the adopted procedure, the ECtHR obliged the Baku authorities to provide information on the conditions and health of those persons, as well as the steps towards ensuring their return.
As regards the interim measure against Armenia, the Court found its application unnecessary and did not consequently seek further actions by the Committee.
