Armenians Celebrate Vardavar - the Day of the Transfiguration of Jesus Christ

10:00     3 July, 2016

Today, on July 3, Armenians celebrate the Feast of the Transfiguration of Our Lord Jesus Christ or traditionally called Vardavar. It is one of the five main feasts of the Armenian Church.

It commemorates the transformation or the "transfiguration" that came over Jesus while He was praying. This day is also associated with an old Armenian tradition of pouring water on one another. Some sources attribute the tradition as a remnant of an Armenian pre-Christian celebration, News.am reports.
