Knesset Speaker Calls on the Government to Recognize the Armenian Genocide

The Speaker of the Knesset Edelstein called on the government to recognize 1915 Armenian genocide committed by the Ottoman Turkey, The Jerusalem Post reports.

As the Israeli President Reuven Rivlin is in Germany, according to the law the Knesset speaker acts as a president. In this regard, Edelstein’s suggestion can be considered of great importance.

"It is no secret that Israel has taken too ambivalent a stance on the Armenian genocide. There are many reasons, diplomatic and otherwise for the Israeli stance being too hesitant and restrained, which downplayed the magnitude of the historical event. We Jews who are still suffering from the impact of the Holocaust cannot minimize the tragedy," – the speaker of the Knesset said urging the government to reconsider its policy.
