The Spectrum of the Development of Tourism Between Armenia and Kazakhstan is Wide Enough

Armenia and Kazakhstan can be interesting for each other in terms of tourism development, but in our countries people know very little about each other. In order to expand tourist flows it is necessary to raise the awareness of the peculiarities of tourism of our countries. This was a topic of discussion at the conference "The Tourism Potential of Kazakhstan and Armenia: Experience, the Perspectives of Cooperation."

The conference was held in Tsakhkadzor in the framework of the project "Armenia-Kazakhstan: Cooperation Platforms" implemented by NGO "European Integration" with the support of Embassy of Kazakhstan in Armenia.

The conference was attended by representatives of tour operators and hotel complexes in Armenia, as well as representatives of the tourism industry in Kazakhstan. Presentations were made by the Head of the Office of Tourism Development Policy of the RA Ministry of Economy, Mekhak Apresyan; an expert on economic integration, the former director on Export Promotion and enterprises of Armenian Development Agency, Lusine Tumyan; the Coordinator of the Information Resource Center Ecotourism of Kazakhstan Aigul Isagulova and the head of domestic and external tourism of Kazakhstan Tourism Association, Raushan Sartayeva.

In his opening remarks Charge d'Affaires of Kazakhstan to Armenia, Kanat Hassenov stressed that "our relations with their roots go deep into the ancient times, and were set in the days of the Great Silk Road."

In her speech Lusine Tunyan also referred to the historical relations of Armenians and Kazakhs, in particular, to the surviving Armenian manuscripts in the Kipchak language, the history of the Silk Road, etc.

The conference participants noted that this whole information is not that well known to the large public in our countries. "In Kazakhstan, we know very little about Armenia," Raushan Sartayeva said. Lusine Tumyan in turn stressed that "one of the first tasks is to present the peculiarities of Armenia to Kazakhstan and the peculiarities of Kazakhstan to Armenia."

For this purpose it was proposed to hold a press tours of journalists engaged in covering the problems of tourism; to develop and organize special familiarization tours for tour operators of the two countries; to actively present the two countries in tourism and other international exhibitions - for example, at EXPO.

Of particular interest for the tourists can be organizing folk events in our countries such as festivals of national cuisine, wine and barbeque in Armenia, etc, and the inclusion of such events to travel packages.

Raushan Sartayeva, in her turn, offered to develop tours along the Silk Road Armenia-Iran-Kazakhstan-Kyrgyzstan. As possible areas of cooperation development children's tourism was proposed.

Mekhak Apresyan said that for the development of cooperation in this field we should work at increasing the number of mutual visits.

As the main obstacle to the development of tourism between Armenia and Kazakhstan the tour operators indicated the lack of direct air communication and its impact on pricing. In this regard, it was proposed to use the route Almaty-Tbilisi-Yerevan before there are direct flights.
