Venezuela's President Threatens to Increase Emergency Powers
Tensions are mounting in Venezuela. The country's president has threatened to increase his powers further by raising the current state of emergency. Pro and anti government supporters have taken to the streets, Euronews reports.
Meanwhile President Nicolas Maduro appeared on television to defend his actions.
"The National Assembly wants to remove me and tie my hands, you know why? If they had my hands tied and I could declare a state of emergency then we wouldn’t have been able to make any decisions."
Earlier anti-government protesters tried to reach the headquarters of the country's electoral body to meet their demand for a referendum to recall unpopular Maduro.
It’s the third demonstration this week. On Tuesday, opposition leader Henrique Capriles called on the country to reject Maduro's extra powers.
