Azerbaijan Between "Star" and "Crescent"

In his interview to Dmitry Kiselyov, the Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev stayed loyal to the years-long foreign policy of Azerbaijan. He again followed the logic of putting his own "faults" on others՛ shoulders and for that as a "harmless" target chose the West.

It is interesting to reveal what the motives of Aliyev’s such a choice are. The secret is just in the local, regional interest. Being in the middle of his regional "partners" - Turkey and Russia - Azerbaijan’s behavior for years has been the one of a non-mature, naughty child, who tried to hide his faults and for that sake continuously blamed either Moscow or Ankara to justify himself in the օther's eyes. Azerbaijan’s such a policy enjoyed the most success, when the contradictions between those two entered a new phase. At the current state of developments, when the Russian-Turkish relations are becoming warm and simultaneously the relations of both Turkey and Russia with the West are rather complicated, Azerbaijan, to be more particular its president, taking an opportunity chose the West as a "scapegoat." The West, presents a "golden mean" for Azerbaijan to please or at least not to make its "regional partners" angry.

It is another issue how the West managed so easily to become "scapegoat" for Azerbaijan. To understand the roots of the issue it is enough to analyze the years-long policy of the West towards the Azerbaijan: throughout this time the West employed the policy of "closing eyes" and permissiveness. This was demonstrated in, to put it mild, the inadequate response of the West to both  internal problems in Azerbaijan and to Azerbaijani military and non-constrictive stance on Karabakh conflict .

The present situation and such a behavior of Azerbaijan does not bring honor to the West and its separate countries. It is hard to imagine that the founding fathers of the EU and US could see in their worst nightmares that they can serve as a "scapegoat" for a country like Azerbaijan.
