The conflict around Catalonia is an internal problem of Spain, the European Union is not going to be an intermediary between Madrid and Barcelona. This was stated by the President of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani, TASS reports.

"Conflict is an internal matter of the country," - he said, calling the October 1 referendum on the independence of Catalonia "absolutely illegal." Taiani called to respect the principles of the legal state and the Spanish constitution.

"This is a Spanish, but not a European problem. We want to see a dialogue between the parties of the conflict, but mediation is not the EU's problem," - Tajani said.
