What Were Trump’s Main Messages at Davos?
The US President’s Donald Trump’s visit to Davos World Economic Forum took place despite all the speculations. It is interesting to note that he became the first US president in 20 years to attend the event. As he noted before his visit on his Twitter page his main aim at the forum was to "tell the world how great America is and is doing. Our economy is now booming and with all I am doing, will only get better...Our country is finally WINNING again!"
During the visit Donald Trump had a number of bilateral meetings with the leaders of several countries such as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Theresa May, President of the Swiss Confederation Alain Berset, Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu, President of Republic of Rwanda Paul Kagame. During all the meetings the main topic of discussion concerned economic issues. For example, during the meeting with Teresa May, as Trump himself noted, the two leaders "affirmed the special relationship and our commitment to work together on key national security challenges and economic opportunities," while with Switzerland they continued "to strengthen our great friendship."
Of special interest was the meeting of Donald Trump with the heads of 15 European companies. As the US National Economic Council director Gary Cohn noted: "The attendees run companies that have sizeable footprints in the United States. They have invested in our economy. We want them to continue to do so and encourage others to join them," Business Insider reports.
Finally, aside from the meetings, it is also interesting to refer to the main messages of Trump’s speech at the forum, the slogan of which seems to become "America First, But Not Alone."
The main messages of the speech were as follow:
- Trump is there to represent the interests of the America people and affirm America's friendship and partnership in building a better world.
- After years stagnation the US is once again experiencing strong economic growth.
- There has never been a better time to hire, to build, to invest and to grow in the United States. America is open for business and is competitive once again.
- Trump will always put America first "just like the leaders of other countries should put their country first also. But America first does not mean America alone. When the United States grows, so does the world."
- US support free trade but it needs to be fair and it needs to be reciprocal "because in the end unfair trade undermines us all."
- The United States is prepared to negotiate mutually beneficial, bilateral trade agreements with all countries.
- No country should be held hostage to a single provider of energy.
- To make the world safer from rogue regimes, terrorism and revisionist powers, US is asking their friends and allies to invest in their own defenses and to meet their financial obligations.
- US calls to unite all civilized nations in their campaign of maximum pressure to de-nuke the Korean peninsula.
- US continues to call on partners to confront Iran's support for terrorists and block Iran's path to a nuclear weapon.
- Trump is pleased to the support that the coalition to defeat ISIS has retaken almost 100% of the territory once held by these killers in Iraq and Syria.
