Is the Issue of Armenian Genocide Recognition Again on Israel's Agenda?

News.am

According to Israeli media the Knesset will hold discussions on the issue of the Armenian Genocide regardless of the Israeli Foreign Ministry's position.

Knesset spokesman Yuli Edelstein is going to put on a vote a resolution to be submitted next week by the member of the parliament, representative of Meretz party Tamar Zandberg.

Earlier, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu received the Foreign Ministry's instruction to postpone discussions on the bill on recognition of the Armenian Genocide before the end of snap  elections scheduled for June 24 in Turkey.

It should be reminded that the discussions on the recognition of the Armenian Genocide in Israel were activated in the face of tensions in the Turkish-Israeli relations. Ankara's tough response to Israel's actions against the Palestinians in Gaza "reminded" Israel of the issue of the Armenian Genocide - to use it to exert pressure on Turkey. Turkey's response also did not come late. Official Ankara warned Israel that its "actions" would only hurt itself.

The issue of the Armenian Genocide recognition is not the first time that is being speculated during the tension in Israeli-Turkish relations. It is noteworthy that threats from Israel do not turn into practical steps, and the recognition of the Armenian Genocide is being "postponed" for various reasons.

Although the discussion of the issue of Armenian Genocide recognition in Knesset contradicts the official position of the Israeli government on the issue, the question of the recognition of the Armenian Genocide will be put on Knesset’s voting next week.

The tension in Turkish-Israeli relations continues and the issue of the Armenian Genocide recognition that has appeared on the Israeli agenda aims to restrain Turkey, not letting it cross the red line.

As for the speculation of the issue of the Armenian Genocide by Israel, the goal of which is to exert pressure on Turkey, it cannot be perceived and be acceptable for Armenia.
