Garo Paylan Demands to Investigate 1955 Pogrom of Istanbul Armenians and Greeks
Istanbul Armenian MP and vice-chairman of the opposition pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic Party (HDP), Garo Paylan, has submitted to the Turkish parliament a formal request for investigating the pogrom and plundering of Armenians and Greeks in Istanbul, in 1955.
As News.am reports, referring to Bianet , Paylan recalled that according to official information, a total of 73 churches, two monasteries and 5,538 houses were destroyed, and 60 Greek women were raped during the events that had occurred in Istanbul on September 6 and 7, 1955.
Also, he stressed that all this was the doing of Turkish "special forces," and that they had carried this out with "brilliance."
"I demand from parliament to start an investigation into the pogrom and plundering in 1955, find and punish those guilty, and pay compensation to the victims," Garo Paylan said.
