OSCE/ODIHR to Conduct "Large-Scale" Election Observation in Armenia
The OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) has announced its decision to organize a large-scale monitoring in the December 9 parliamentary election in Armenia.
Members of the mission met on Tuesday with Tigran Mukuchyan, the chairman of the Central Electoral Commission (CEC), to introduce their activities and election observation methodology, the CEC’s press service reports.
The OSCE/ODIHR will send 13 permanent members, about 20 long-term and over 200 short-term observers to Armenia to conduct the monitoring, the head of the mission, Urszula Gacek, said, adding that representatives of the OSCE and the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assemblies’ observation missions will also join them later.
Highlighting the importance of the monitoring in the December 9 snap election, Mukuchyan highly appreciated also observation missions’ role and significance in electoral reforms. He also briefed the guests on their current organizational activities.
The CEC approved the schedule of the snap election on November 2. The deadline for the political forces to submit their applications is 6:00pm Yerevan time, November 14. So far, only Acting Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s Civil Contract party and the alliance "We" have announced their plans to run for election.
