Pashinyan’s Increasing Respect Towards CSTO And EEU

“Secretary General of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) can’t be appointed without considering Armenia’s opinion,” Armenia’s prime minister Nikol Pashinyan said during a press conference in Matenadaran, as reported by “Armenpress”.

He stressed that Armenia’s position at CSTO is clear cut. “We tend to think that the term is ours but our partners do not agree with us, substantiating that it is not regulated and there is room to interpret. Consequently we are for clarifying the regulation before appointing new secretary general. If for some reason the secretary general does not serve the term we should know how the issue is regulated. It seems that we have come to terms over this.”

He recalled that following the process of CSTO’s calling Yuri Khachaturov back there was a backlash in the society. The definitions as to what had happened were “apocalyptic”. But, in fact, nothing happened. We said that all people are equal before the law and we proved it. During this period Armenia’s interests have been well protected. The talks we had in the CSTO format have been helpful. “Through the history of the CSTO there have not been such talks,” he stated.

The prime minister assessed the atmosphere both in the CSTO and the EEU as upbeat. “Unfortunately in these organizations the bulk of work is carried out behind closed doors and the society does not see the accompanying spirit of the discussion. They are meaningful, profound, concerned and sometimes heated, something that essentially increased my respect towards those organizations. I think this is an objective and correct assessment,” Pashinyan stressed.
