Artsakh Republic Ministry of Foreign Affairs Statement Regarding the Situation Around Armenian Player of London Arsenal Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

Artsakh Republic Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement regarding the situation around Armenian player of London Arsenal Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

The statement reads:

"The processes associated with holding the final match of the Europe League in Baku, which  midfielder of London Arsenal and captain of the Armenian national football team Henrikh Mkhitaryan had to miss and numerous Armenian fans failed to attend, is a further evidence that the negative consequences of decades-long government hate policy toward Armenians cannot be overcome overnight. A sporting event that could contribute to reconciliation of the parties in conflict, had the opposite effect and demonstrated the extent of rejection by the Azerbaijani side of everything connected with the Armenians."

“The insemination of Armenophobia and encouragement of crimes committed on the grounds of Armenophobia have been raised to the level of a state policy that the President of Azerbajian has formulated in the following way: “All Armenians are the main enemy of Azerbaijan”.

The problem of xenophobia against Armenians in Azerbaijan has soared to the extent that any citizen of Azerbaijan who publicly advocates fixing relations with Armenians is subject to intimidation and harassment by the Azerbaijani authorities, as that happened with Azerbaijani writer Akram Aylisli. Moreover, any person bearing the Armenian surname, regardless of citizenship and age, is discriminated against when trying to visit Azerbaijan. This situation even caused a detailed comment by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation of July 6, 2017. In particular, the Information and Press Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia was forced to state that Russian citizens of Armenian origin who come to this country are indeed discriminated on the basis of ethnicity.

Despite the several calls of international organizations, the Azerbaijani government isn’t taking an action to fulfill its international commitments to eliminate all forms of discrimination.

Amid the ongoing deterioration of the situation in relation to xenophobia in Azerbaijan, it is the general responsibility of the international community to impact the Azerbaijani authorities to put an end to the hate propaganda and eliminate the negative phenomena caused by that propaganda. The state policy of many years has reached a point where public expression of Armenophobia has begun to be perceived as a norm in Azerbaijani society. To reverse this negative trend, it will be necessary to take active steps with the international community to allow the Azerbaijani society relieve itself of the norms of misanthropy being radicalized by the authorities and take the path to recovery,” the statement particularly reads.
