Former Uefa President Michel Platini Arrested Over Awarding of 2022 World Cup to Qatar

dailyrecord.co.uk

Former Uefa president Michel Platini has been arrested over the awarding of the 2022 World Cup to Qatar, Telegraph reports.

French publication Mediapart claim Platini was taken into custody on Tuesday morning as part of the investigation by the Anti-Corruption Office of the Judicial Police (OCLCIFF).

The 63-year-old former Juventus midfielder and France captain - who won the Ballon d'Or three times in succession in the 1980s - was president of Uefa between 2007 and 2015, before he was banned by Fifa's Ethics Committee.

Platini is currently serving a four-year ban from involvement in football - reduced twice from an original eight-year sanction - after he was found guilty of receiving a "disloyal payment" from then-Fifa president Sepp Blatter.
