Prince Harry and Meghan to ‘Step Back’ From Royal Duties in Extraordinary Retreat
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are to "step back" as senior royals "to become financially independent," the couple have announced — a major shakeup in the British monarchy that appeared to take Buckingham Palace by surprise, euronews reports.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex said they had taken the decision "after many months of reflection and internal discussions."
"We have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution," they said in a statement. "We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the royal family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen."
However, Buckingham Palace appeared not to have been informed of the couple's decision.
