President Armen Sarkissian Had a Remote Conversation with the Distinguished Architect Sashur Kalashian: Hay Park, Gyumri, Gyurjiev
The future all-Armenian park, Hay Park is to be created on the territory of the Tsitsernakaberd complex which at the moment comprises the Armenian Genocide Memorial and the Genocide Museum-Institute. Quite naturally, the author of this idea and initiative President Armen Sarkissian is conducting consultations on this issue with professional circles. The distinguished architect Sashur Kalashian, who along with the famous architect Arthur Tarkhanian, is the co-author of the Mets Eghern Memorial and Genocide Museum-Institute, undoubtedly might be one of the best advisors on this topic.
The architectural legacy of Sashur Kalashian is quite impressive. In addition to the Mets Eghern Memorial and Genocide Museum-Institute, the Kumairy state historical and architectural national park-museum was designed and constructed with his co-authorship, as well as the museums of Sergei Merkurov and Aslamazian sisters, Children’s Creative Center, the Puppet Theater, buildings of Dzitoghtsians and Tsaghikians brewery in Gyumri. Gyumri is not accidental on this list, considering the fact that Sashur Kalashian was born in Gyumri, and in 1976-1994 was the Chief Architect of Gyumri.
Gyumri was among the topics that the President of Armenia discussed during the phone conversation with the distinguished architect. The President inquired about his health and work under the emergency situation, encouraged him to continue with creative thinking to translate them ultimately into ideas and projects.
The President said that Kalashian’s professional counsel and support are very important and could be great support also to the implementation of the Hay Park project initiated by him. President Sarkissian presented to the architect the project in brief and noted that thanks to this proposal-initiative not only our memory would be generated anew on this territory but our attitude toward ecology and healthcare would be manifested in a new way. The implementation of the project will result in planting on a 100 hectares of 1,5 million trees - one tree in the memory of each victim, creation of various areas which will comprise one entity. Each of the areas will be named after a province, region, big and small settlements.
President Armen Sarkissian and Sashur Kalashian recalled once again his works in Gyumri. The architect agreed to advise the President on the projects to be implemented there. In particular, President Sarkissian spoke of a historical, cultural and construction project – creation of the Gyurjiev district in Gyumri. The project will be carried out jointly by “Gyumri, My Love” Foundation, Hayastan All-Armenian Fund and Rizzani De Eccher international company.
Speaking of the great intellectual, philosopher Gyurjiev, who was born in Gyumri, the President said that he was intending to totally reconstruct or build from scratch his home in Gyumri. On the territory, which has already been allocated, a unique cultural ambiance will be created where the creative spirit of Gyurjiev, his system of values, and his invisible presence will reign. The place will be part of a spacious area, while Gyurjiev’s house will be its center.
The President expressed hope that Sashur Kalashian’s professional assistance would be instrumental in calling the initiative to life.
