From 16 December: Berlin Goes into Hard Lockdown

The red-red-green senate agreed on Sunday on a hard lockdown from 16 December with the closure of many shops and schools, as announced by the governing mayor Michael Müller (SPD). This is to apply initially until 10 January 2021, Berlin.de reports.

Emergency care is to be offered in Kitas

Berlin is thus implementing resolutions that the federal and state governments had agreed on in the morning during a meeting with Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU). Emergency childcare is to be offered in the daycare centres. However, the Senate appeals to parents to look after their children at home wherever possible.

Berlin schools close from Wednesday

In Berlin, the holidays thus begin three days earlier than planned. After the official end of the holidays - as the education administration had already announced last Friday - the pupils are to study at home under the guidance of their teachers and with the help of digital solutions in the week from 4 to 8 January.

Food retailers and drugstores remain open

Many shops will have to close, such as hairdressers, beauty salons or shops for clothes. Food retailers, weekly food markets, pharmacies, medical supply stores and drugstores, among others, are exempt. Opticians, hearing aid acousticians, petrol stations, car repair shops, bicycle repair shops and banks are also allowed to open. In order to get the high infection figures under control, a partial lockdown has already been in place in Germany since 2 November, with the closure of restaurants, cultural and leisure facilities and restrictions on private contacts. Now even stricter measures are to follow.
